Just as fatty foods can clog your arteries, the discharge of fats, oils and grease (FOG) can clog sanitary sewers. This results in an overflow of raw sewage, which can harm the environment and damage property. Oil and grease from commercial and residential kitchens can cause blockages inside the home or business, and in the community sewer. SVCW staff visit restaurants and other food service facilities in Redwood City, San Carlos, and unincorporated San Mateo County, to provide guidance on proper handling of FOG. Without correct maintenance of grease traps and grease interceptors, FOG will enter our sewers, causing expensive, environmentally damaging blockages and overflows.
