Silicon Valley Clean Water Honors Monte Hamamoto’s Distinguished Career Ahead of Retirement
After 36 years in the water and wastewater industry, Monte Hamamoto leaves behind a legacy of innovation, mentorship, and operational excellence
Silicon Valley Clean Water (SVCW) proudly acknowledges Monte Hamamoto, Chief Operating
Officer, for his remarkable 36-year career in the water and wastewater industry as he prepares for his well-deserved retirement in December 2024. Monte’s tenure at SVCW, beginning in 2012, has left an indelible mark, characterized by his innovative leadership, commitment to excellence, and dedication to cultivating talent within the organization.
“Monte’s contributions to SVCW have been nothing short of extraordinary,” said Teresa Herrera, General Manager of SVCW. “Over his 12 years with us, Monte has overseen the efficient operations of our facility while fostering a culture of excellence, innovation, and mentorship that has strengthened our organization’s future. We are deeply grateful for his dedication and wish him a fulfilling and joyful retirement”.
Hamamoto joined SVCW with extensive experience in both public and private sectors, managing treatment plants and leading operational advancements. Over his tenure, he oversaw SVCW’s daily operations, ensuring compliance and efficiency at the 29-million-gallon-per-day treatment facility serving the communities of Redwood City, San Carlos, Belmont, and the West Bay Sanitary District. Under his leadership, SVCW achieved numerous milestones, including enhanced process management and a focus on sustainability.
Hamamoto’s impact extends beyond operations. His dedication to workforce development has been a cornerstone of his career, ensuring the future of the industry by nurturing talent at every level. Through thoughtful succession planning, Hamamoto has facilitated numerous internal promotions, creating a ripple effect of opportunities within SVCW. He has also inspired the next generation of water and wastewater professionals as an adjunct professor at Gavilan College, where his mentorship has guided students into successful careers in the field.
Reflecting on his career, Monte shared, “My greatest pride comes from seeing the individuals I’ve mentored grow into leaders themselves. I’ve been fortunate to work with incredible teams and contribute to an industry that protects public health and the environment. While retirement is bittersweet, I’m excited to continue supporting the field through teaching and mentorship.”
As part of SVCW’s seamless transition plan, the organization is proud to announce Daniel Buenrostro as Hamamoto’s successor. Currently serving as Operations Director, Buenrostro brings over 16 years of expertise in the wastewater field, including regulatory compliance, operational leadership, and strategic planning. Buenrostro’s tenure at SVCW since 2008 has demonstrated his dedication to upholding the values and standards established under Monte’s leadership.
Hamamoto’s retirement marks the end of an era, but his legacy will continue to influence SVCW and the water and wastewater industry for years to come. Silicon Valley Clean Water extends its deepest gratitude to Monte for his decades of service and congratulates Daniel on his well-deserved promotion as SVCW’s new Chief Operating Officer.
